My work begins with a stimulus; something observed, dreamt or remembered, a sensation or emotion. The embryonic idea never leaves my consciousness for long as I mentally excavate and assimilate my impressions. Finally concept and materials come together and studio work begins. There is always an element of the sensory in my artwork - texture, color, a deep space—something to engage the senses of the viewer. The intention of the work is to contemplate boundaries, edges, and limits. My abstract color fields run the risk of invisibility but silence, patience and deep listening is fundamental to the satisfaction of the viewer.

Artist Statement

In Zen, “…the ideas of the poet should be noble and simple.” My paintings, influenced by these concepts, are also entrenched in the formal properties of the painting process—color, edge, space and form. Colors transfuse the surface and each other in magical ways. I layer paint until I capture the right note. My reductive color fields run the risk of invisibility because like poetry, deep listening is fundamental.

Best advice you’ve been given • Develop tenacity of spirit, make your core belief about work strong to keep you honest and non-wavering in the face of negativity. Be organized.

Goals/Aspirations • To continue to be curious, try new things and keep working!

Favorite artist • I am greatly influenced by the world around me rather than any one artist but the authenticity of Rothko, Still and other reductive artists inspire me.

What are you reading • Rereading all of Jane Austin, the restraint in her characters is delicious.

Hope to learn how to • Type. What a blessing that would be!

You spend a lot of time thinking about • Right now, the “black matter” in our universe.

Favorite musical artist • Right now, Keith Richards. Loved his autobiography, which demonstrated a serious and intense practice.

What do you do when not creating art • Reading and traveling. I recently traveled to the Antarctic.
