Christmas Tree Small Room
Christmas lights glow on a crisp, wintery night in Alligator, Mississippi. This is from a series called, When Morning Comes, which is a reflection of life on the Mississippi Delta. I first traveled to the region in the summer of 2009 because I needed to breathe after my own troubled times. I was in search of something stronger than myself and attended its churches not to photograph but to cry and be redeemed and to just be part of the place. Over the years I have witnessed signs of strength against struggle, humility amidst pride and a promise for deliverance in the lives that I’ve come to know here. In what began as a journey for personal exploration is found a narrative of another man’s faith, identity, and perseverance. These are the traits of strong men. And maybe that is the lesson I was looking for all along.

Artist Statement

My personal work is firmly rooted in the documentary tradition but leans upon more figurative imagery to weave its tales. I am enticed by portraiture and long form narratives that allow me the time to develop intimate relationships with the people I am photographing. I tend to leave behind as much as I take away.

Best advice you’ve been given • Always remind yourself that the only way to make good work is by doing your work. Stay true to your own voice.

Goals/Aspirations • To stay focused, to stay inspired and to stay productive.

Favorite artist • I can’t really say that I have a favorite, I draw so much inspiration from all art forms. Recently I have been drawn to the work of the late Wayne Miller. He won two Guggenheims for his work documenting the African American communities of Chicago’s South Side in the years following WWII. He used that work to “introduce man to man,” to show the commonality of us all. I’ve found a lot of inspiration in that message given my own subject matter with When Morning Comes.

What are you reading • The Art of the Commonplace, a collection of Agrarian essays by Wendell Berry.

Hope to learn how to • Speak a foreign language fluently.

You spend a lot of time thinking about • As a freelance photographer I unfortunately spend a disproportionate amount of time thinking about work.

Favorite musical artist • Al Green

What do you do when not creating art • I tend to my garden and bake pies.
