Combing through an estate sale one day, I found these unused drapes still in their packaging. It looked like the lady who owned the house always meant to put them up, but hadn’t gotten around to it. I used the extra fabric to cover the lampshades in the photograph. 'Anonymous Women: Draped' is a series about becoming the dwelling itself; the double edge of domesticity. The home is a place of comfort but can also camouflage individual identity when decor becomes an obsession, or an indication of position or status. 'Staying home' for some women is a place of power, while others abhor it because of its prison-like atmosphere. This series is made up of various vignettes, where the subject becomes part of her domestic trappings. Her identity is fused with the home.

Artist Statement

Photographers comment on the world we live in by interacting with reality and visibly displaying their perceptions. I believe that every artist has a moment or time which became a defining point in their life view. As we struggle to discover that, we repeat work trying to recreate or redefine it. For me, photography seems to be the most satisfying way of expressing how these inner and outer worlds converge.

Best advice you’ve been given • Keep going and be yourself, you are not like anyone else.

Goals/Aspirations • To have my work speak (loudly, intimately, directly) to others, particularly women who find themselves conflicted about status, home, or other domestic issues.

Favorite artist • Right now it is DeChirico. I love surrealism and his space, as well as content of his figures and places. My favorites change yearly.

What are you reading • Mysteries. I go through them about one a week.

Hope to learn how to • Use Adobe Premier, speak French fluently, play the piano, make a business plan.

You spend a lot of time thinking about • What my dreams are about and what I need to do next.

Favorite musical artist • Rorey Carroll

What do you do when not creating art • Going from one place to another, since my husband took a temporary job in another city and my studio is in Chicago!
