Creating the images for Natural History is at once exhilarating and tedious. A split second alchemical moment occurs when a person’s moving reflection joins in a meaningful way with the immobile century old dioramas. It’s my goal to capture that which no one else sees, and usually it involves a lot of waiting and loitering in some of America’s most famous museums. I hang out at the very edge of the diorama waiting for people to come view it and then snap shots utilizing a bounced flash aimed at the very top of the diorama which then refracts off the glass and strengthens the reflection rather than erasing it. Often this leaves me lingering in the shadows near the same diorama for long periods. I often imagine the same challenges as when out in the field stalking wildlife except that these non-human subjects are not running from me and in fact it is the people that are hard to catch.

Artist Statement

Natural History is a series of candid, in-camera single exposure images, which merge the living and the dead, creating allegorical narratives of our troubled co-existence with nature. Ghost-like reflections of visitors viewing wildlife dioramas are juxtaposed against the preserved subjects, housed behind the thick glass with their faces molded into permanent expressions of fear, aggression or fleeting passivity.

Best advice you’ve been given • That discipline and perseverance are just as important as talent. I’ve seen so many talented artists fail to succeed because they can’t discipline themselves to work hard. This is the hardest job I’ve ever had, but I can’t imagine doing anything else.

Goals/Aspirations • There is a whole other plane of vision and expression that I can sense but not quite see, like a skittish animal hiding in the shadows. I hope to find enough quiet in my mind to coax it out.

Favorite artist • I am hugely inspired by Victorian portrait photography and 17th century painting. In the world of photography however, I would have to say that the two artists who made me realize what I wanted to try and achieve are Garry Winogrand and Matt Mahurin.

What are you reading • Historical fiction

Hope to learn how to • Paint

You spend a lot of time thinking about • Motherhood, light and mortality

Favorite musical artist • Leonard Cohen

What do you do when not creating art • Laundry. I have a 2 year old!
