This piece is a reflection on how drought impacts our landscape as well as our wildlife. The matches in the nest symbolize fire. After a fire there is a rebirth of the landscape. Many seeds do not germinate until there is fire. While creating each piece, I take many still life photos to see how the elements work together. Once the photos are taken, I sort through and find the images I feel have the most impact. If I like what I see, I make an archival ink jet print and paint around the image. I like the difference between the preciseness of the photo and the painterly qualities of the background.

Artist Statement

I call this series of my work Altered Reality. It is a melding of still life and surrealism. These works are about contrasts and differences, they are playful and dream-like. I like putting together odd and ordinary things. I also like the merging of the photos into the paint, a way to emphasize what is real and what is not.
