Artist Statement

I am fascinated with ancient and primitive cultures. I borrow images from those ancient sources and introduce my patterns and markings, creating my personal world of mythical dimension. I enjoy experimenting with colors and mixed media, looking for unexpected results which I then work intuitively in my paintings, combining the use of repetitive patterns, markings, textured layers and subtle transparencies.

Best advice you’ve been given • Paint with your heart and always mean it. Never be wishy-washy while going through the creative process or it will show in your work.

Goals/Aspirations • Remain passionate and driven and support myself with my artwork, so I can immerse myself in it to the fullest.

Favorite artist • Picasso is a great inspiration, also Francis Bacon, Gottlieb, Klimt, Klee, Matisse, Miro, Scholder, Motherwell but I am influenced most by African, American Indian and Aboriginal art.

What are you reading • I am always reading a few books at the same time: Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris K. Goodwin, Crimes by Ferdinand Von Schirach, Verre Casse by Alain Mabanckou. Art Favorites: The Beginning of Seeing: Tribal Art & Pictographs of Adolph Gottlieb, Fritz Scholder: Indian Not Indian, Gustave Klimt by Comini.

Hope to learn how to • Speak Italian, learn printmaking and hang glide!

You spend a lot of time thinking about • My artwork and the strong influence ancestral art has on my creative process. Also, my loved ones and their well being.

Favorite musical artist • I enjoy so many but if I have to pick one - John Coltrane.

What do you do when not creating art • Movies, concerts, art exhibits, reading, traveling or having dinner with family and friends, sharing good conversation and lots of laughter.
