  descriptionA young boy leaps over a water puddle after a summer rain at his home in Duncan, Mississippi. This is from a series called, When Morning Comes, which is a reflection of life in the Mississippi Delta. I first traveled to the region in the summer of 2009 because I needed to breathe after my own troubled times. I was in search of something stronger than myself and attended its churches not to photograph but to cry and be redeemed and to just be part of the place. Over the years I have witnessed signs of strength against struggle, humility amidst pride and a promise for deliverance in the lives that I’ve come to know here. In what began as a journey for personal exploration is found a narrative of another man’s faith, identity, and perseverance. These are the traits of strong men. And maybe that is the lesson I was looking for all along.

  descriptionIn 2012 I was invited to participate in a show at the entitled Desert Grasslands. I traveled to Arizona to collect the plants on the Muleshoe Ranch in southern Arizona. This piece is part of my Tree of Life series, which is inspired by this icon. A tree of life symbolizes the belief that through the study of nature you can gain a greater understanding of the self and of reality. - - I combine plant specimens with images and words, resulting in complex visual narratives that reveal the science, history and beauty within each subject. Original pieces are produced in small editions of 8-10 on 100% rag watercolor paper. My technique is a combination of several different media collaged together, such as: digital photography, gouache, acrylics, and pen and ink. Compositionally, I juxtapose elements so the work becomes like a visual puzzle that evokes a sense of wonder and mystery in the viewer, because that’s the way I feel about the natural world.

  bioI create collages with discarded, patterned, security envelopes. Security envelopes obscure their contents. It is impossible to read what is inside, even when they are held up to light. Offset and imprecise patterns create a scrim, which serves as a decorative backdrop to our bureaucratic tangles. I often create images dense with flora, that echo the envelope’s intended use as camouflage to hide private documents.
