The Barrister's Bedroom Small Room
I made this photograph of an empty room from my own experience with home and family. The past is here through memory but sometimes I imagine what’s going to happen, so the future is here too through imagination. When memory and imagination bring the past and the future together, they collide in a single instant, a Eureka moment richly laden with meaning more felt than understood. This photograph is such a moment. The dollhouse in the photograph is circa 1900s and measures three feet high by four feet wide. I used a variety of lenses, perspectives, lighting and digital techniques to create a sense that the rooms are real but at the same time disturbingly not real. I used lights ranging from strobes to pencil flashlights and had small mirrors made so I could photograph some of the room’s interior corners.

Artist Statement

Art critic Heather Snider writing for Eyemazing: "The photographs in Eric L Hansen’s series Dollhouse reveal themselves slowly. At first encounter they are immediately engaging with their color palette and evocative use of light. A moody range of blue-green hues, muted ochres, and dimly rendered pastels create an environment that is cool, inviting, and mysterious... whether this place is a real house or a dollhouse is ultimately irrelevant... it is a distinct presence."

Best advice you’ve been given • Engage fully with the process of making art and new work will appear as if by magic; cherish all accidents

Goals/Aspirations • This artist's life is a gift, and my goal is to live it fully and completely.

Favorite artist • Paul Cézanne, for his intensity and for the way he pushed back the boundaries of his time to enlarge painting’s domain

What are you reading • "Shaman" by Kim Stanley Robinson, who usually writes science fiction but here goes back in time to the caves at Lascaux and Chauvet

Hope to learn how to • Shoot and edit video

You spend a lot of time thinking about • The piece I’m working on

Favorite musical artist • I know everyone says they’re eclectic but I really am, from Rammstein to Rachmaninov. But just one? Probably Jack White

What do you do when not creating art • I hang out a lot with the poet Stellasue Lee, I am a serious gym habitue, and I love films for the visual storytelling.
