Most of the petal pieces are my visual interpretation of a memory or experience. Color and the illusion of movement are integral to this work. Paper becomes the canvas and paint - the sensation of a moment. To do this, I make hundreds of paper pieces, which accumulate into thousands. Each paper is individually water-colored, or painted with wax and then sewn to linen or fixed to rigid surfaces. This work is about the joy of making and the pleasure of watching the paper morph as it accumulates into a unified mass.

Artist Statement

I: make accumulate repeat obsess struggle transform tell
It is: constant urgent unavoidable abundant survival purposeful work
I feel: fear purged panic pain release surrender joy

My work gravitates toward labor intensive, highly repetitive methods of accumulation. I enjoy combining modern inventions with traditional making methods and strive to weave them into a collective whole. For the past few years, I have focused exclusively on paper: exploring and expanding my experiences with the medium.

Best advice you’ve been given • Go to your studio every day and make something. Making is your job.

Goals/Aspirations • I would like the art to make a difference in a person's life. I believe that art is necessary - it is certainly necessary for me to make things.

Favorite artist • Joan Mitchell, Joan Snyder, Jaune Quick to See Smith, Ann Hamilton - women who invent their own ways of painting-making; women who make in a way that feels right for them.

What are you reading • A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry

Hope to learn how to • Speak Italian

You spend a lot of time thinking about • Creating the next body of work

Favorite musical artist • I am a classically trained pianist, so Chopin, Brahms, Bartok, Philip Glass. But also RadioHead, Amy Winehouse and Robert Plant are fabulous.

What do you do when not creating art • Thinking about making art, hiking, spending time with my family, cooking and gardening
