Between Here and There is a series of paintings that investigates the theme and design quality of the zig-zag pattern through an intuitive process of line expression and mark making to mimic the waves of energy and movement in nature. Rendering these marks and imitating a natural history of time and place, the natural environment is depicted while presenting itself in the form of this zigzag pattern. In this work I am concerned with seeing lines within the work and interconnecting more as they begin to work with each other. Layering and depicting a sense of time and place and progression of the natural world is the common connection in this work. This series of painting is my expression of creating a balance of beauty and my attempt to restore harmony through a mental, physical, emotional, spiritual process that I strive to do in my everyday life. These zig zag patterns and the element of nature they represent can show themselves at any instantaneous moment and it is up to us to appreciate and internalize their presence.

Artist Statement

My work is an investigation of identity. I am drawn to the subtle questioning of this examination. I find inspiration in everything and I use various themes rooted in the correlation and the conflict of both my Native American and contemporary mindset. I am equally interested in the abstract qualities of expression as well as the human figure.

Best advice you’ve been given • Don't go through the motions of being an artist, be ready for any opportunities that arise.

Goals/Aspirations • To establish longevity in my career so it can continue to provide a livelihood.

Favorite artist • I stopped having a favorite artist. Instead I started asking: "What is my favorite thing about this artist?" This has allowed me to consider and examine many artists' work, no matter what kind of medium.

What are you reading • Color and Meaning: Art, Science, and Symbolism by John Gage

Hope to learn how to • Build a home from the foundation up

You spend a lot of time thinking about • How we as human beings fit into the grand scheme of nature and how art can connect us for very brief moments.

Favorite musical artist • I often listen to traditional, intertribal songs but when I am in the studio painting, I like to listen to classical music.

What do you do when not creating art • Being a full-time father and tending to our family livestock and all that ranch life demands. Attending traditional/cultural ceremonies and learning all I can about traditional Navajo teachings and stories.
