This Catching a Glimpse series of paintings revolves around the idea of past present and future. The figure within the portrait has occupied this place in time and has lived within different eras of time. The American Indian People have occupied their homelands for centuries and often are forgotten or looked past. This series is reminiscent of the fact that even though this is the way dominant society sees us, which is usually at a moment's instance, we have a rich abundance of culture, tradition, language, and ways of life that are unique and prevalent in all nations of Native people. This painting depicts a man from the plains people standing in the present moment.

Artist Statement

My work is an investigation of identity. I am drawn to the subtle questioning of this examination. I find inspiration in everything and I use various themes rooted in the correlation and the conflict of both my Native American and contemporary mindset. I am equally interested in the abstract qualities of expression as well as the human figure.

Best advice you’ve been given • Don't go through the motions of being an artist, be ready for any opportunities that arise.

Goals/Aspirations • To establish longevity in my career so it can continue to provide a livelihood.

Favorite artist • I stopped having a favorite artist. Instead I started asking: "What is my favorite thing about this artist?" This has allowed me to consider and examine many artists' work, no matter what kind of medium.

What are you reading • Color and Meaning: Art, Science, and Symbolism by John Gage

Hope to learn how to • Build a home from the foundation up

You spend a lot of time thinking about • How we as human beings fit into the grand scheme of nature and how art can connect us for very brief moments.

Favorite musical artist • I often listen to traditional, intertribal songs but when I am in the studio painting, I like to listen to classical music.

What do you do when not creating art • Being a full-time father and tending to our family livestock and all that ranch life demands. Attending traditional/cultural ceremonies and learning all I can about traditional Navajo teachings and stories.
